Backyard Remodeling & Leveling in North Georgia
Turn a sloped, rocky Georgia backyard into flat, usable space — retaining walls, fill dirt and grading for playgrounds, sport courts, pet areas and outdoor living in Cumming, Milton, Alpharetta and beyond.
So many North Georgia backyards are beautiful to look at and nearly impossible to use. Steep slopes, exposed rock and uneven ground leave families with acreage they can't enjoy — no flat spot for a swing set, no level run for the dogs, nowhere to put a court or a fire pit. A backyard remodel starts with the land itself: we reshape it with retaining walls, engineered fill and precise grading so the space you've been imagining actually fits your property.
Part of our Outdoor Living & Landscape Design in North Georgia work across North Georgia.
What we see most often
- A sloped or terraced backyard with no flat area for kids to play
- Rocky terrain that makes digging, building or even mowing difficult
- Washed-out, eroding slopes that get worse every heavy rain
- No level space for a playground, basketball court, pickleball court or pet area
- A yard that drains toward the house or pools water where you want to build
Scope of work
What this work includes
Retaining walls
Boulder, segmental block or timber walls engineered to hold the grade change, with proper drainage behind every wall so it lasts.
Fill dirt & grading
Importing and compacting structural fill in lifts, then fine-grading a flat, stable surface sized for how your family will use it.
Drainage correction
Swales, French drains and surface shaping so the new level area sheds water and the slope above stops eroding.
Play & recreation surfaces
Prepared pads for playgrounds and swing sets, basketball and pickleball courts, sport courts, trampoline areas and open lawn.
Pet & family zones
Level runs for dogs, fenced pet areas, turf or sod installation, and safe transitions between the new levels of your yard.
Outdoor living tie-ins
Patios, fire pits, seating walls and lighting planned into the remodel so the finished backyard works as one space.
A flat, stable, drained backyard with room for the playground, court, pet area or outdoor living space your family has been wanting.
How it goes
Our process
- Step 01
Walk the property
We look at the slope, rock, soil and drainage with you and talk through how you want to use the space.
- Step 02
Plan the grade
Wall locations, fill depths and elevations are set before a machine ever moves.
- Step 03
Build & fill
Walls go in, fill dirt is placed and compacted in lifts, and drainage is roughed in.
- Step 04
Finish the space
Fine grading, sod or turf, and the courts, play areas or patios your remodel was for.
Common questions
Backyard Remodels questions we get
- Can you flatten a sloped backyard?
- Yes — that's the core of most backyard remodels we do in North Georgia. Retaining walls hold the grade change, fill dirt builds up the low side, and grading creates a flat, stable area. The size of the flat space depends on wall height and layout, which we plan with you on site.
- What can I do with a leveled backyard?
- Playgrounds and swing sets, basketball courts, pickleball courts, batting cages, trampoline pads, dog runs, fire pit areas, pools and pool decks, or simply a lawn your kids can actually run on. Once the ground is flat and drained, almost anything is possible.
- How do you deal with rocky terrain?
- North Georgia is full of granite and fieldstone. We excavate rock where it's in the way, reuse boulders as retaining walls or accents when they're worth keeping, and bring in fill to build over what can't be moved economically.
- How much fill dirt does it take to level a yard?
- It varies widely — a modest level lawn area might take a few dozen loads, while a large sport court pad on a steep lot can take far more. We measure on site, plan wall placement to minimize fill, and give you a real number before work starts.
- Do I need a retaining wall to flatten my yard?
- Usually, yes, if the grade change is more than a gentle slope. Walls hold the soil in place and keep the new flat area from eroding. Every wall we build includes drainage behind it, which is what makes it last in Georgia clay.
