A crowned or in-sloped finished surface in the right stone size so water leaves the driving lane instead of running down it.

Ditches, cross-drains and culverts installed with the drive rather than added after the first washout.

Common questions

Gravel Driveways questions we get

Why does my gravel driveway keep washing out?
Because water is running along it instead of across it. A drive with no crown and no cross-drains becomes the lowest channel on the property. Fixing the shape and adding drainage costs less over five years than repeated stone deliveries.
What kind of gravel is best for a driveway in Georgia?
A graded aggregate base for structure, topped with a surface stone such as 57 or a crusher-run blend depending on slope and traffic. Pure round river rock never locks up and should be avoided in the driving surface.
How thick should the gravel be?
Typically six to eight inches of compacted base for residential traffic, more where heavy trucks or equipment run. Thickness without compaction and fabric does not help.
How often does a gravel drive need maintenance?
A properly based and crowned drive usually needs grading every couple of years and a light topping occasionally. Annual rebuilding is a symptom, not a schedule.
